2 Reasons To Choose A Same-Day Crown

One of the more common dental procedures that many people need is a dental crown which consists of a cap that goes over the remains of your tooth in order to protect what remains of the tooth and restore its shape. In most cases, a dental crown is utilized when there isn't enough left of your tooth structure to support a basic filling.

When getting a crown you will have to choose between a traditional crown or a same-day crown. Listed below are two reasons to choose a same-day crown over a traditional one.

Fewer Appointments

The main benefit provided by a same-day crown is that it is much easier to fit into a busy schedule as it will usually only require one appointment to complete. This is possible because a dentist that offers same-day crowns will have the equipment in his or her office to create your permanent crown as soon as your tooth is prepared for it. This is great if you have a busy work schedule where it can be extremely difficult to take time off from work to go to multiple dental appointments in the span of a few weeks.

With a traditional crown, your dentist will often require that you make at least two appointments to complete the process. This is because your dentist will prepare your tooth for the crown during the first appointment and then order your permanent crown from a dental lab. At that point, you will have to wait several days or weeks for the permanent crown to arrive, which can often be quite inconvenient.

No Temporary Crowns

A major benefit provided by a same-day crown is that it removes the necessity of having to wear a temporary crown. Temporary crowns are used in a traditional crown procedure to protect your tooth until your permanent crown arrives. The problem with many temporary crowns is that they can be a bit of a pain to wear.

This is because temporary crowns can become loose very easily, which causes the crown to shift across your gums and cause painful scratching. Also, when these temporary crowns are loose they can allow liquids and food to get under it and cause potential pain and discomfort. While these temporary crowns are not meant to be worn for more than a few days or weeks, why wear one at all if you can get a same-day crown and avoid it altogether?

Contact your dentist to discuss if he or she offers a same-day crown and the benefits that it can provide. Same-day crowns are a great alternative to traditional crowns because they can be completed in fewer appointments and allow you to avoid wearing a temporary crown for any amount of time.
